Aerial Filming in Edinburgh

This June we were asked by Foundlight Productions to do some aerial filming in Edinburgh.  The client was Invest Edinburgh who were commisioning a short film that sells Edinburgh as an attractive place to invest. Our objective was to capture the incredible green spaces, vistas as well as the great access to activities around the city.

We filmed down in the Meadows, next to Princes St Gardens, along the Shore in Leith and on top of the Salisbury Crags.  It had been a long time in planning and we had been postponed multiple times by the poor weather.  However it was well worth the wait. We were rewarded with beautiful conditions which combined with the great locations to capture some stunning visuals. A favourite was shots of the iconic castle from the grounds of St Cuthberts.

Aerial filming in city centres with drones is not a simple task – this project required negotiations with the CAA and City Council – but we were able to prove our ability to carry out the work safely.  Horizon AP now hold an Operational Safety Case approval from the CAA. This now allows us to operate in congested environments with large systems.  We can legally operate our aircraft to within 30m of persons and property not under our control – without the requirement for prior approval from the CAA.  Aerial filming in Edinburgh and other UK city’s is now a viable option for production companies.

If you have a project that requires aerial filming in Edinburgh please get in touch – Horizon AP specialise in aerial filming with unmanned aircraft. We are able to ensure a safe and successful service that adds great production values to any project. We also offer aerial photography services. This allows us to get unbeatable perspectives of properties and locations.

Many thanks to Foundlight Productions for the opportunity and the photos used in this post.

I run a video production company on the Isle Of Man and am just on the brink of achieving my permissions from the CAA (passed groundschool and flight assessment – finalising my ops manual).

I found your site after re-watching the Sony A7S video with fstop academy and wondering which platform was used. Do you guys offer a build service for a similar platform that was used in the video? I’m happy enough flying my phantom at the moment but am looking at options to be able to film with the Sony A7RII or the BlackMagic micro camera when it is released, using a UAV under the 7kg category.

If you have any questions happy to discuss I’m on 07624415062 or email:

    Hope you can help.

    best wishes,
