Frequently Asked
Questions
What does it mean to fly a drone for recreation?
In the United States, if you are flying a drone purely for fun, that is considered recreational. If you are flying a drone for non-recreational use, the FAA requires a Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate.
What counts as a drone?
For the purpose of this training, the term “drone” includes a variety of aircraft such as remote controlled (RC) airplanes, RC helicopters and quad-copters.
How long does this take?
From start to finish, the training and test take about 30 minutes.
When does this training start and finish?
It is self-paced, so you can start at any time and set your own pace.
Is there a deadline to take this test?
There is no deadline, but the FAA is asking all recreational flyers to complete it as soon as possible.
How old must I be to take this test?
There is no minimum age requirement.
Do I need to be a U.S. citizen?
You do not need to be a U.S. citizen to fly, to take this training or to register a drone under the recreational flyer rules.
What if I already have my Part 107 certificate?
If you already have your FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate, you do not need to go through this training, unless you plan to fly under the recreational rules.
What happens if I lose my Certificate of Completion?
Upon completion of the test, recreational flyers should print or save a digital copy of their completion certificate and keep it on their person when they fly. UAV Coach cannot re-issue your completion certificate if it is lost. The FAA cannot re-issue your completion certificate. Should you lose your completion certificate, you will need to re-take TRUST and obtain a new certificate.
How long is this certificate good for?
You take the training one time and do not need to retake it unless you lose your certificate.
Why is this free? What's the catch?
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires that we provide this training and test to you for free. Beware of anyone trying to charge you for this service.
Why can't I take this test directly from the FAA?
The FAA has written the entire online training and test that you will take here. They have approved us to be a Test Administrator for this process.
Where do I go to take this test?
Both the online training and online test can be accessed by clicking on the “Start Training” button on this page.
Who do I contact if I have technical issues?

Where You're Allowed to Fly
Several companies are FAA-Approved UAS Service Suppliers (FAA USSs) of the Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability (LAANC). These companies (LAANC USSs) provide FAA approved airspace authorizations and information about airspace restrictions to recreational flyers who wish to fly in controlled airspace.
The FAA app B4UFLY provides information about airspace (but does not offer airspace authorizations).
