FAA Drone Rules & Registration

Whether you want to fly for fun or for work, it can be a little complicated to know exactly what you’re supposed to do and how to make sure you’re following all the rules.

In this section of the course, we’ll take you through all of the FAA’s rules for flying a drone, providing everything you need to know in one place.

Everyone who owns a drone has to register it with the FAA. In addition to covering the FAA’s rules, we’ll walk you through the registration process so that you’ll feel reassured you’re in full compliance by the time you step outside to fly your first flight.

Drone Flight Training

If you’re interested in flying a drone for work, you may have already passed the FAA’s Part 107 test—a key requirement for getting your commercial drone license—and still not know how to fly very well.

That’s because the FAA doesn’t require practical knowledge for you to become a commercial drone pilot. But how are you supposed to learn the skills you need so you can actually start getting clients?

In this section of the course, we walk you through basic flight training so you can build up your drone pilot chops.

Here’s everything that’s included in this section:

  • Your Guide to Drone Hardware & Flight Controls
  • Mastering the Basic Flight Maneuvers
  • Cinematic Maneuvers & Settings to Level Up Your Drone Shots
  • How Return to Home (RTH) Works
  • Using Intelligent Flight Modes
  • Risk Management (AKA Planning for What Can Go Wrong)

Pre-Flight Checklist & Planning

Flying a drone safely isn’t just about knowing how to fly. It’s also about knowing how to plan.

Bad weather, last minute Temporary Flight Restrictions, airspace restrictions, equipment failure—these are just some of the things that a seasoned drone pilot will think about before heading out to fly.

In this section of the course, we walk you through everything you need to consider before you fly, giving you a full playbook for planning a successful flight.

This section includes:

  • Planning for A Few Days Before Your Flight
  • Planning for the Night Before (or Morning of) Your Flight
  • Your Pre-Flight Checklist

How to Apply for FAA Airspace Authorization

The FAA divides the airspace into different types—some don’t require permission for flying your drone, and some do.

The permission you get from the FAA to fly in restricted airspace is called airspace authorization. Over the last several years the FAA has made progress in streamlining the authorization process, but it can still be tricky to navigate depending on where you want to fly.

In this section of the course, we walk you through how to get airspace authorization, also helping you understand whether you need it or not for the location where you plan to fly.

Here’s everything this section covers:

  • Do I Need Airspace Authorization?
  • How to Get Airspace Authorization (Using LAANC)
  • How to Get Airspace Authorization (Using FAA Drone Zone)
