Cinematic Video Shot on Mavic 3 Pro Cine by Denis Barbas

DJI just released the Mavic 3 Pro, the first drone ever to come with a triple-camera system. An upgrade option for the new drone is the Mavic 3 Pro Cine, which can shoot video in Apple ProRes on all three of its cameras. This new video from creator Denis Barbas showcases what’s possible with the Mavic 3 Pro Cine. According to Barbas, the drone’s 3-in-1 camera module “[allows] me to get three different viewing angles from the same drone, without the need to change lenses or anything else, taking my creative process to a whole new level.”

Sony Releases Major Updates to Airpeak Drone

Sony recently announced upgraded software and accessories for its Airpeak drone, the only drone it has launched to date. Although the Airpeak was originally made for capturing cinematic aerial footage, the updates open up new use cases, allowing it to be sold for inspections and other kinds of commercial scenarios.

Upgrades to the Airpeak include:

• Extended flight time. New, denser 3,938mAh battery packs extend the drone’s flight time from 12 to 20 minutes.
• Improved imaging. A new, lighter-weight Gremsy gimbal designed for accurate imaging in industrial applications is now available with the Airpeak.
• RTK capabilities. A new RTK kit provides more reliable and accurate control, especially around areas with strong interference (like wind turbines). The RTK kit supports repeat missions with centimeter-accurate positioning (this is a big upgrade from the previous GNSS system, which only supported meter-accurate precision).

Of course, all these upgrades come at a cost. The new battery packs cost about $400 each, and the new RTK kit and gimbal each cost around $4,000. The Sony Airpeak sells for about $9,000.

DJI FPV Goggles Now Compatible with Mavic 3 Series Drones

A new firmware update makes all Mavic 3 series drones compatible with the DJI Goggles V2 and the DJI Goggles Integra, as well as the DJI RC Motion 2 remote control. When using the goggles to fly, the drone can only be controlled with the RC Motion 2 controller. Both the Goggles Integra and the RC Motion 2 just came out at the start of April, in a release that combined them with the Avata, DJI’s cinewhoop-style drone.

Following the firmware update, here are all the drones that can now be flown with DJI’s FPV goggles:

• The Mavic 3 Pro and Mavic 3 Pro Cine
• The Mavic 3 and Mavic 3 Cine
• The Mavic 3 Classic

Aerospace Company Textron Wins $279 million in Case Against DJI

Aerospace company Textron Innovations Inc. has won a lawsuit against DJI, securing it $279 million. The lawsuit claimed that technology used in DJI’s drones violated two patents owned by Textron. The patents in question describe flight control systems, taking specific issue with automatic hovering capabilities found in DJI drones, which Textron says work in the same way as described by patents that it owns. DJI has denied Textron’s allegations. After the verdict, a DJI spokesperson said the company “strongly disagrees” with the outcome of the case and will “vigorously pursue all options.”
