Drone operators are no longer required to independently contact air traffic control when flying within five miles of an airport. Instead, both recreational and commercial flyers can use the automated LAANC system to request airspace authorization to fly in controlled airspace around and above many airports. If you’re operating in Class B, C, D, or E controlled airspace, you’ll need to request airspace authorization. You may do this through LAANC or through FAADroneZone in areas where LAANC is not available.

Bicentennial Park is an open green space located in downtown Oklahoma City. It sits between the Civic Center Music Hall and the historic City Hall building. The park consists of a beautiful lawn area with a diverse network of brick paver pathways. Drone pilots will appreciate the stunning views of the downtown skyscrapers that tower above the park. Numerous buildings and attractions make this a great location for capturing that picture-perfect city shot.

2 — Wheeler Park

1120 S Western Ave, Oklahoma City, OK 73108

Wheeler Park is located on both sides of the Oklahoma River in Oklahoma City. It consists of wide-open areas, mature trees, and a few baseball fields. The park features the Wheeler Ferris Wheel, which has a unique history. The Ferris Wheel originally was located on the Santa Monica Pier in California, which became a popular location for photos and commercials. In 2008, it was purchased for Wheeler Park and over one million dollars was spent to restore it. Today, it spins alongside the river offering a stunning view of the surrounding area and makes for a beautiful backdrop for any drone footage.

3 — Regatta Park

Regatta Park is located along the banks of the Oklahoma River in Oklahoma City. It the home of the Chesapeake Boathouse where rowing training and competitions take place. There are a few open space areas that are connected by bridges that would make great areas for flying a drone. In addition to the rowing, there are trains nearby that roll on by across the river creating a unique setting for drone pilots looking for that perfect shot.

Lakeshore Park is located on a peninsula that extends out onto Lake Hefner in Oklahoma City. The park is perfect for drone pilots because of the openness of the property. The massive 2500 acre reservoir offers breathtaking views that add to the scenery of this park. There are weekly sailboat races that provide the perfect opportunity to practice filming with a drone.

5 — Spring Creek Park

Spring Creek Park consists of 194 acres and is located on the west side of Lake Arcadia in Edmond, Oklahoma. There are various fishing docks, camping areas, swimming areas, and open areas. The reservoir was constructed in 1987 and has a surface area of over 1800 acres. Drone pilots will enjoy the picturesque setting and ample footage opportunities.
